About Brittany Porter

The self-proclaimed Beyoncé of real estate law, Brittany Porter has always had a passion for numbers and property. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, she attended Hampton University, one of the nation’s most prominent HBCUs, where she graduated with her bachelor’s in business administration, with a focus in accounting. Upon graduating, she was accepted into the 2013 Teach for America Corps, where she dedicated two years as a math teacher at H. Grady Spruce High School in Dallas, Texas. Within her first year, she was able to increase standardized test performance scores by 30% and was the top scoring teacher, which earned her the district’s highest monetary bonus and a dual promotion to Algebra I Team Lead and Director of the Academy of Finance.

Upon the expiration of her commitment, Brittany moved to Malibu to attend law school at Pepperdine University. There she earned her juris doctorate and certificates in real estate law and dispute resolution. She also served as President of the Black Law Students Association, Vice President of the Latinx Law Students Association, and founded Pepperdine’s Open Conversation – a group dedicated to discussing relevant social justice topics gripping society. Additionally, she volunteered with the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County and served as a law clerk for the Honorable André Birotte Jr., a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

As a licensed attorney, Brittany was called upon to represent various California public agencies in monetizing their real estate. Her practice focused on public agency real property acquisition, disposition, leasing, land use, environmental and regulatory due diligence, consolidation and monetization, with a focus on public/private development projects. She also counseled numerous school board and board-appointed committees and has expertise in business and procurement matters, Brown Act, conflict of interest and Public Record Act matters.

She soon matriculated into “Big Law,” where she represented clients in a wide range of local and national real estate transactions, including the representation of lenders and borrowers in complex financing transactions, including workouts and restructurings; institutional and non-institutional investors, sponsors, owners, and operators in connection with the acquisition, structuring, joint venture, property management and disposition of a variety of real estate asset classes (including multifamily, senior living and care, office, retail, and healthcare); and landlords and tenants in all commercial leasing matters.

Brittany considers all her previous work experiences the necessary milestones she needed to accomplish before landing her dream job as JohnHart’s general counsel.

Ironically, as a child, Brittany wanted to be a veterinarian. She currently serves as a foster paw-rent for the East Valley Animal Shelter. Outside of work, you can catch her at Rosie’s Dog Beach with her two dogs (Bella and Buju) and three cats (Brinx, Brooklyn, and Basíl). Yes, the cats go too!
