Vin Scully’s $15M Home is a Bit Different Than Other Houses for Sale in Los Angeles

It’s been a rough year for Dodgers fans. They made it through just 4 of the National League Division Series championship games before their season met its end. It wasn’t the conclusion fans envisioned earlier this year as the team won a staggering 11 games, edging out the franchise record. It’s a feat only five other teams in history can claim. But the season was punctuated by an even greater tragedy; one that easily overshadowed any of the team’s defeats. In August, the world had to bid a painful adieu to legendary announcer Vin Scully. Now, several months later, his jaw dropping $15-million home has hit the market. And its price tag alone is casting a tall shadow over other houses for sale in Los Angeles.

UPDATE: So, that $15 million home only sold for $14 million. Yes, we just wrote “only sold for $14 million.” But with the low end for houses for sale in Los Angeles creeping to the $1 million mark, maybe we should get used to it? The home only lasted on the market for a month, which isn’t too surprising considering the legend who lived there.

The Painful Absence of Vin Scully

In the wide world of sports, there are announcers and then there was Vin Scully. For Dodgers fans, and sports fans in general, he was more than the voice of the team. He informed the team’s spirit. Many Angelenos could count on three things in life: death, taxes, and Scully’s smooth delivery every baseball season. But his legacy stretches back to before the Dodgers were even an LA team.

Scully’s tenure with the Dodgers started back in 1950 when they were playing for Brooklyn. Eight years later, when the team made the move to LA, Scully came along too. It was only the beginning for the legendary sportscaster.

When he retired in 2016, he’d spent an astounding 67 seasons calling Dodgers games. It’s no wonder one of the streets surrounding Dodgers Stadium was named in his honor. We’re hesitant to proclaim that Vin Scully is important to Dodgers history because he will always be a part of their heart and soul. And he recognized his place in the pantheon of sports titans. It’s why he dubbed his sprawling LA property “Home Plate.”

Setting “Home Plate” Apart from Other Houses for Sale in Los Angeles

There are plenty of extravagant houses for sale in Los Angeles at any given time. Recently, we took a look at a $75 million condo, the most expensive to ever be listed in the area. But none of the other houses for sale in LA can boast that they were the former residence of Vin Scully. So, what can you expect from the former sportscaster’s 11,615 square foot property?

When you slide into “Home Plate”, you can expect state-of-the-art luxuries like a private theater, peaceful library, and even a wine cellar. Outside you’ll find a full-sized tennis court, secluded putting green, and, of course, the quintessential swimming pool and spa combo. It also has plenty of additional features that are common in houses for sale in Los Angeles.

One of the most distinctive features of this home is its architecture, reminiscent of a French chateau. Scully purchased the luxury home for around $12.4 million in 2009 and continued residing there until his passing at the age of 94. Located in the exclusive Hidden Hills gated community, it’s redolent with a distinct charm that distinguishes it from other houses for sale in Los Angeles. However, its overly French aesthetic is so specific that it likely won’t satisfy all tastes.
